Bret, Kevin, and I have finished four albums together. I love the process of writing and recording with these guys, and I hope we keep doing it for a long time. That said, we recognized that our method of releasing our music was a little stale.
We’ve released our last two albums via Bandcamp, and we distribute them through Distrokid, which gets our songs on services like Spotify. No physical product. Physical product is great, but it’s expensive and time consuming. And here’s the worst part of physical product: if you don’t sell them all, there’s the question of … storage. Anyone who’s ever had to entertain the idea of throwing their product into the trash bin knows this particular kind of pain. Our all-digital approach works well enough for us, but what has become obvious over these last two albums is folks aren’t much keen on buying digital albums.
I’m not sure why. I still buy digital albums, though not with the frequency I once did. Album releases are what I’ve known to this point, and I didn’t see any better way to get our music heard and, hopefully, cover our production costs. The approach worked well enough for Loving Every Other Minute of It, but that album was also released on CD and vinyl. And it was my first album back after 12 years. Since then, just cranking out an album every two years and dropping it on Bandcamp hasn’t been working.
So, we’re trying something different.
As we make Album Five, we’re looking for opportunities to release select tracks as singles before the album comes out. We wrote songs during the lead up to the 2024 presidential election, and it became obvious that there was no way to avoid having songs that reflect this fraught and pivotal time. We were wrapped up in the outcome, and that vibe creeped into the songs.
One of these songs, “Laugh About It Later,” seemed to speak directly to the anxieties caused by the lead-up to the election. Then once the election was over, it took on a whole new meaning. I liked that it spoke to the moment, but I envisioned putting it out on an album in 2026—well after that resonance would be dated or gone.
The only solution was to let you have it now, and what better day to release it than inauguration day! If the day is filled with some anxiety for you, know you are not alone.
So, here is “Laugh About It Later.” We hope you like it.
Great track. Glad you chose to release it as you did. It IS timely
